5 Ways Spending Time in Nature Helps Children Develop

If we look back a century, our earth was so much greener and cleaner. Today, there is so much going on- global warming, deforestation, extinction of species, choking of the earth with plastic, industrial waste, drying up of water bodies, and the list goes on. Researchers blame the poor relationship we share with nature. We don’t care for nature the way we care for our home.

Most of us have heard from our grandparents or even parents that they used to play amidst nature. Our children, unfortunately, don’t have that luck. So, it has become our duty to make them feel connected to nature.  It makes them happier, healthier, and brighter.

When children spend time playing outdoors in the lap nature, they embrace an all-rounded development.

The 5 Benefits of Spending in Nature

Physical

The natural fresh air is exhilarating and energizing. It encourages play and activity which leads to physical strength. When our children play in the sunlight they get the much-needed Vitamin D. Being outdoors helps kids to keep their body fit and mind alert. It also contributes to the overall fitness of the physical body.

Social

Playing outdoors is a great way to make new friends. It also helps kids learn new things, and broaden their outlook. Kids learn to collaborate, share, and solve problems in an amicable and cooperative manner. Being with people of similar age group helps kids develop social skills, maybe even comfort a friend who would be sad or upset or hurt.

Cognitive

Nature is the best classroom where kids can learn by doing. Children get stimulated by the different sounds, sights and smells in nature. The outdoors affords prospects to discover, create, solve and learn. These activities keep their minds energetic and lively. They grow curious and become ready to learn. The learning in nature is real time and genuine. It encourages kids to keep trying even if they do not succeed at first. Kids gain self-confidence and become resilient.

Emotional

When kids play outdoors, it is so much more than physical activity. It feels liberating and encourages kids to move freely. They explore the aspects of nature, and find self-expression without indoor restrictions. Laughter and being in the company of friends reduces stress and anxiety. It also raises levels of happy hormones in the brain! Further, nature has a therapeutic effect on the mind and brings a sense of calm. We need to help our kids engage in such activities which enhance emotional strength and resilience.

Environmental

When kids feel connected to nature, it encourages them to care for nature. With the future of the world in their hands, children need to understand the value of loving nature selflessly.

In Conclusion:

The truth lies in front of us. We need to create the connection between our kids and nature. Being under the sky’s blue and the tree’s green makes children happy and healthy. The great part is that as parents, you can join your kids in climbing trees, or even playing in the mud – and learn something new about your kids, nature, and yourself!

Outdoors is a great tool to rejuvenate and resuscitate the mind of kids. It enhances their overall well-being.
