How to Encourage Creativity in a Child Through Yoga?

by | Jul 8, 2022 | Creative Imagery

Creative imagination (CI) is essential to children as it boosts their mental growth. It develops the links between the right and left parts of the brain and improves their memory and focus. With CI, your children think of new ideas and develop their problem-solving skills. Your children are more confident in themselves. And it helps with their social growth too.

Yoga is an age-old path to fitness, a healthy life, and becoming self-aware. Yoga has amazing benefits for your children’s minds and bodies. You can use it in different ways to boost your creative skills in your children and their overall growth. Yoga for children includes themes like stories, calming the mind, and learning to meditate. All these and other tasks boost imagination and creativity in childhood. Here are some of the ways to use yoga to raise CI in your children.

  1. Imagine Yoga Poses

Children are curious by nature and find basic yoga poses fun. Combine both of them and help raise creative children. Ask your children to do simple poses like tree pose, cat and cow pose, and mountain pose among others. Now ask them to imagine how they would feel if they were the elements of the poses. Let’s make it clearer. Ask your kids to imagine they are trees and have taken roots. Next, ask them to imagine they have grown branches and leaves. Now ask your children to describe these feelings. The same way goes for mountain pose. Ask your children how it feels to be towering over others. How it feels to be steady and strong. For the cat and cow pose do the same. Ask how it feels to be swift and stealthy like a cat. And how it feels to be strong and gentle like a cow. This way, your kids learn to imagine things from different points of view. It helps them become more creative too.

  1. Name Yoga Poses

Take this approach to yoga to build creative imagination in your children. Ask them to give new names to the yoga poses they do. E.g., the tree can become a stick pose. Ask your kids how and why they gave these names. Next, ask them to create and add positive vows to their games. E.g., when doing yoga poses like warrior poses, saying, “I am brave and strong” in between the poses. Ask your kids the reasons behind the phrases they create and how it helps in their yoga and life. This helps your children explore the ideas behind their phrases and ways to form and speak them in a clear way.

  1. Ask Open-Ended Questions

When doing yoga with your kids, ask open-ended questions. E.g., how do you feel when doing a specific pose. Does that make you feel strong or full of energy? Or after doing the lion pose, ask what would you do if you were a lion, the king of the jungle. Or after the eagle pose, if you are an eagle, where would you fly? These questions make them curious and you get so many creative and funny answers as well.

  1. Lower Stress and Anxiety

This is a byproduct of doing yoga that boosts CI in your children. Yoga and breathing exercises relax and calm the mind. These poses help your kids focus and think more clearly. It frees your kids’ minds to be more creative and improves their critical thinking skills. Your children start relying on themselves instead of looking at you for every single one of their problems. Your children think outside of the box and find creative solutions to their problems. This also makes them more confident and raises their self-esteem.

  1. Doing Yoga Together

Yoga is so fluid that you can modify it to achieve the best results. Ask your kids to do yoga poses that need each other’s help. Ask them to modify and change the poses that require each other’s help. Ask them how changing the poses helped them do poses better. Again, this engages your children to form clear answers. And helps them become more creative too.

Final Thoughts

So, these are some of the ways to boost imagination and creativity in childhood through yoga. Creative children are confident, problem-solvers, and critical thinkers. They grow as well-rounded adults who are successful and content. You can teach your children to be creative through your own efforts. Or you can join a yoga teacher training course. You learn how to teach yoga along with ways to make your children more creative. Along with that, you learn to teach good habits and values to your children. And help them become content, well-rounded, and successful adults.
